Class Attendance Policy

  1. Class attendance regulations in the current MSU catalog will be adhered to and followed in all DMCS courses. It is the responsibility of all students to read these regulations.
  2. Students must plan their scheduling and activities so as not to be absent from announced tests, quizzes, or final exams.
  3. Illness or other circumstances that necessitate extended absence from class or absence from final exam must be reported as promptly as possible to the instructor.
  4. All absences will be considered unexcused unless resolved with the instructor within five school days of returning to the class.
  5. Legitimate proof (as determined by the instructor) will be required in order for the instructor to consider an absence from class or a final exam as an excused absence.
  6. Tardiness to class will be considered an unexcused absence unless resolved with the instructor at the end of the class period.
  7. In cases of an excused absence on the day of a test, the instructor reserves the right to reweight the final exam in lieu of a make-up.
  8. No make-ups or reweighting will be given for unexcused absences on days of tests, quizzes, or exams. A grade of zero will be assigned for the above missed test, quiz, or exam.
  9. If the instructor excuses the absence and chooses to give a make-up, it is the responsibility of the student to arrange to take and/or to take the make-up tests, or exam within five school days of returning to class. If no such arrangements are made or the student fails to take the scheduled make-up, the student will be assigned a grade of zero for the missed test or exam.
  10. Late homework or programming assignments will, in general, not be accepted. In some cases such may be accepted but only with a penalty in grade. The penalty will be determined by the instructor.
  11. Students must also understand that they are responsible for all material covered and assigned during their absences (excused or unexcused) and that they are responsible for the academic consequences of their absences.
  12. If any student is absent from class, excused or unexcused, more than twenty-five percent of the number of times a class is scheduled to meet, the instructor may recommend to the student's department head that the student be dropped from the roll of the class with the appropriate grade.
  13. Cell phones and pagers are to be silent during class. Students should not leave class to answer the phone. Any deviation from this policy must be approved by the instructor before class.
