Computer Operation and OCL
Course description: Survey of operating systems for mini- and microcomputers, and an introduction to a user interface system.
Prerequisites: Ability to program in a high level language, or permission of department head.

Objectives
The student will be able to
- identify the major desktop components and their functions;
- identify the major system files;
- use OSs' command-line functions;
- identify the basic concepts and procedures for creating, viewing, and managing disks, directories, and files;
- identify the procedures for installing OSs and bringing OSs to a basic operational level;
- identify steps to upgrade OSs;
- identify the procedures for installing/adding a device (loading/adding/configuring device drivers);
- recognize and interpret the meaning of common error codes;
- recognize when to use common diagnostic utilities and tools;
- identify the networking capabilities of OSs.

Assessment
The Semester score for the course will be calculated by using the weights (%) indicated below:

Notes:
- In cases of an excused absence, the instructor reserves the right to reweight the final exam in lieu of a make-up test.
- In the case where a student's score on his final exam indicates exceptional achievement above and beyond that indicated by the semester average, the instructor reserves the right to reweight the value of the final exam in computing the semester grade.
