Structure of Programming Languages


Course description: Applied course in programming language constructs emphasizing the run-time behavior of programs. Analysis and specification of different programming languages in terms of their features and limitations based on their run-time environments.

No duplicate credit for Csci 416 and Csci 546.

Prerequisites: Csci 274 and Csci 281, or permission of department head.

Text: Concepts of Programming Languages, 7th edition, by Robert W. Sebesta, Addison Wesley 2006.

Lexical and Syntax Analysis Ch. 4 ~ 2 weeks
Binding times, Scope, Etc. Ch. 5 ~ 1.5 weeks
Data types Ch. 6 ~ 1.5 weeks
Assignment Statements Ch. 7 ~ 1 week
Control Statements Ch. 8 ~ 1.5 weeks
Subprograms Ch. 9 ~ 1.5 weeks
Implementing Subprograms Ch. 10 ~ 1.5 weeks
ADTs Ch. 11 ~ 1 week
Various Programming Languages ~ 1.5 weeks

The above is an approximate time table for the course, other material may be covered as time permits.

Assessment

The Semester score for the course will be calculated by using the weights (%) indicated below:

Notes:

  1. One written paper will be required for students taking Csci 416. Two written papers will be required for students taking Csci 546.
  2. In cases of an excused absence, the instructor reserves the right to reweight the final exam in lieu of a make-up test.
  3. In the case where a student's score on his final exam indicates exceptional achievement above and beyond that indicated by the semester average, the instructor reserves the right to reweight the value of the final exam in computing the semester grade.
