Topics in Numerical Analysis

Course description: Selected topics in advanced numerical analysis. Course may be repeated for different topics.

Prerequisites: Permission of department head.

Text: Numerical Analysis: Mathematics of scientific computing by David Kincaid and Ward Cheney, 3rd edition.

Calculator: A one- or two-line scientific calculator is allowed on exams, but no graphing calculators or laptop computers.

Student Learning Outcomes

The student will be able to

apply classical analysis techniques to algorithms from numerical integration and differentiation, ordinary differential equations and systems of ordinary differential equations, to understand their use and limitations;
understand floating point numbers, their limitations in representing real numbers, and the resulting round of errors and their effect on scientific calculations;
go on to more focused advanced graduate work in the types of algorithms studied.

Objectives

The student will be able to

perform computations, both on computers (coding in Matlab) and with paper, pencil and hand calculator with the above algorithms;
compute the errors from roundoff and truncation in the application of the algorithms studied;
use the analytical techniques to choose the algorithms to apply to a given problem in applied mathematics;
use error analysis to decide on various parameters to use in the implementation of the chosen algorithms (e.g., step size, iterations, tolerance levels, etc.).

Assessment

The Semester score for the course will be calculated by using the weights (%) indicated below:

The Semester letter grade in the course will be assigned according to the scale below:

Notes:

In cases of an excused absence, the instructor reserves the right to reweight the final exam in lieu of a make-up test.
In the case where a student's score on his final exam indicates exceptional achievement above and beyond that indicated by the semester average, the instructor reserves the right to reweight the value of the final exam in computing the semester grade.
