Developmental Mathematics I


Course description: Fundamentals of introductory algebra. Designed for the student whose enhanced ACT score in mathematics is 17 or less.

Grades of S: Satisfactory, SP: Satisfactory/Provisional, or U: Unsatisfactory

Course material

Course material will include the following topics:

Algebra: basic operations Ch. 7 1–8 ~ 4.5 weeks
Equations Ch. 8 1–3 ~ 1 week
Word problems Ch. 10 1–4 ~ 0.5 week

Assessment

The Semester score for the course will be calculated by using the weights (%) indicated below:

25.0% Final exam grade

The Semester letter grade in the course will be assigned according to the scale below:

70–100 S
0–69 U

Notes:

  1. The final exam will be a departmental exam.
  2. A student who scores above 84 on the final exam will receive a mark of S in the course.
  3. Students whose unexcused absences total more than 10% of the number of class periods will have their names turned in to the Developmental Math Coordinator. A list of these students will periodically be submitted to the department head. These students may be withdrawn from the class roll, and given an appropriate grade.
  4. In cases of an excused absence, the instructor reserves the right to reweight the final exam in lieu of a make-up test.
  5. In the case where a student's score on his final exam indicates exceptional achievement above and beyond that indicated by the semester average, the instructor reserves the right to reweight the value of the final exam in computing the semester grade.
