Developmental Mathematics II


Course description: Fundamentals of introductory algebra. Designed for the student whose enhanced ACT score in mathematics is 17 or less.

Grades of S: Satisfactory, SP: Satisfactory/Provisional, or U: Unsatisfactory

Prerequisites: Math 091, or a Math Enhanced ACT score of at least 13, or permission of the department head. One year of high school algebra recommended.

Course material

Course material will include the following topics:

First degree equations with one unknown Ch. 3 all ~ 2 weeks
First degree equations with two unknowns Ch. 4 all ~ 2.5 weeks
Exponents and radicals Ch. 5 all ~ 3 weeks
Quadratic equations Ch. 6 1, 3 ~ 1.5 weeks
Inequalities Ch. 7 1, 2 ~ 1 week
Complex numbers Ch. 8 all ~ 2 weeks

Assessment

The Semester score for the course will be calculated by using the weights (%) indicated below:

 5% Homework grade (as assigned by instructor)
10% Lab grade
60% Tests (five tests)
25% Final exam grade

The Semester letter grade in the course will be assigned according to the scale below:

70–100 S
0–69 U

Notes:

  1. The final exam will be a departmental exam.
  2. Attendance is required in both lecture and lab (see DMCS Class Attendance Policy).
  3. Any student with impaired sensory, manual, or speaking skills is encouraged and has the responsibility to contact his/her instructor regarding reasonable accommodations.
  4. Calculators may be used throughout the course, as permitted by the instructors.
  5. In cases of an excused absence, the instructor reserves the right to reweight the final exam in lieu of a make-up test.
  6. In the case where a student's score on his final exam indicates exceptional achievement above and beyond that indicated by the semester average, the instructor reserves the right to reweight the value of the final exam in computing the semester grade.
