Linear Algebra and Matrix Theory

Course description: Matrices, determinants, systems of linear equations, vectors, vector spaces, linear transformations, and applications.

Prerequisites: Math 190, or permission of department head.

Text: Linear Algebra and It's Applications by David C. Lay, 3rd edition, Addisson-Wesley.

Objectives

The student will be able to

solve systems of linear equations by a variety of methods including row reduction and use of technology;
demonstrate knowledge of matrix algebra;
understand vector space properties and concepts using Rn, mxn matrices, and function spaces as examples;
understand the concepts of linear independence and spanning sets in Rⁿ and other vector spaces;
find bases for vector spaces and subspaces and apply the rank theorem;
compute determinants and demonstrate knowledge of their properties and applications;
understand the role linear transformations play in the study of vector spaces;
compute eigenvalues and eigenvectors and demonstrate understanding of diagonalization and its applications;
use technology as a means of exploring conjectures and solving applied problems;
prove selected theorems throughout the course.

Topics and applications may be added or deleted at the discretion of the instructor.

Assessment

The Semester score for the course will be calculated by using the weights (%) indicated below:

The Semester letter grade in the course will be assigned according to the scale below:

Notes:

In cases of an excused absence, the instructor reserves the right to reweight the final exam in lieu of a make-up test.
In the case where a student's score on his final exam indicates exceptional achievement above and beyond that indicated by the semester average, the instructor reserves the right to reweight the value of the final exam in computing the semester grade.
