Matrix Theory and Applications
Course description: Topics from matrix theory with emphasis on techniques useful for applications. Matrices, determinants, orthogonality, some linear algebra, material on canonical forms.
Prerequisites: Permission of department head.

Objectives
For successful completion of this class, the student will demonstrate the ability to
- reason correctly and rigorously; understand the concepts and how they relate to each other; investigate and prove or disprove general statements about the various objects encountered in the course;
- understand advanced linear algebra concepts (such as: vector space, subspace, bases and dimension, linear operators and their matrix representation), be able to produce correct proofs, and compute various numerical invariants;
- manipulate matrices correctly; compute their determinant, rank, nullity, inverses, eigenvalues; relate matrices to linear operators and be able to change bases;
- compute dimensions and find bases for a linear operator's kernel, image, and eigenspaces;
- bring a matrix to various canonical forms, including Jordan form;
- bring a quadratic form to standard form;
- use canonical forms and exponentials to solve systems of linear differential equations.

Assessment
The Semester score for the course will be calculated by using the weights (%) indicated below:

Notes:
- In cases of an excused absence, the instructor reserves the right to reweight the final exam in lieu of a make-up test.
- In the case where a student's score on his final exam indicates exceptional achievement above and beyond that indicated by the semester average, the instructor reserves the right to reweight the value of the final exam in computing the semester grade.
